RLA-Laureates appeal for ecological organic agriculture in Africa

27.06.2014

Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award (RLA) have appealed to Heads of States of the African Union to start implementing the roadmap for ecological organic agriculture in Africa.

During an RLA-conference at the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development in Cairo in June, eleven laureates from Africa and Switzerland signed the appeal.

“The United Nations declared the year 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming. Today, more than ever, it is time to develop and implement the roadmap for the needed transition towards Ecological Organic Agriculture as promised by the African Heads of States and Governments in their decision on organic farming”, the appeal states.

It goes on to list relevant reports and documents on which the roadmap is built and refers to the latest findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the grave consequences for food security in Africa.
